Founded by former professional surfer Royden Bryson, Surf for Lives is a non-profit association dedicated to supporting children from underprivileged communities in South Africa. What begins with a passion for surfing evolves into a pathway towards independence, empowerment, and sustainable careers.

The association provides children with a safe, nurturing environment where they can enjoy the ocean in their youth, while guiding them as they transition into adulthood and explore career opportunities built on their ocean-based skills.

Catching a Break

Surf for Lives believes in inclusivity and opportunity. While it supports clubs like the Trafalgar Saints Surf Club, its impact reaches far beyond — embracing children from surrounding communities who need help and are part of the broader surfing family.

Every child is welcomed into an environment where they can find joy, guidance, and skills that extend well beyond the waves. By collaborating with local authorities and organizations, the association helps open doors to new possibilities, from lifeguarding and joining the Sharks Board to serving in the South African Navy.

Challenges & Resilience

Fighting the Tide

The children supported by Surf for Lives face immense challenges, many rooted in poverty and lack of resources. Surfboards, wetsuits, and even food are often scarce. Some children walk over 10 kilometres barefoot to reach the beach each weekend, determined to surf despite hunger and fatigue.

Surf for Lives steps in to bridge these gaps — providing equipment, mentorship, and a safe place to belong. Through the dedication of its volunteers and the generosity of supporters, the association stands as a shield against the tide of hardship, helping children stay afloat and thrive.
