Royden Bryson is an ex-professional World Championship Tour (WCT) surfer and one of the most respected figures in South African surfing. Based on the KZN Lower South Coast, he brings rare expertise: an intimate understanding of waves, conditions, hidden breaks, and above all, an unwavering passion for sharing the ocean authentically.
Beyond surfing, Royden is co-founder of Surf for Lives, a non-profit organisation supporting children and young adults from underprivileged South African communities through surfing, professional training, and mentorship.
Working with Royden means benefiting from an understanding of South Africa's coastline that few possess. It's also supporting a bigger mission: giving ocean access to those who don't have it, and creating lasting opportunities.
South Africa is one of those rare destinations where surfing is not just about the quality of the waves — it's about the journey, the landscapes, the people you meet along the coast, and the rhythm of life shaped by the ocean.
Jeffreys Bay & the Eastern Cape (March to October): One of the most iconic surf destinations in the world, famous for long, perfectly shaped right-hand point breaks. Local knowledge is essential here — many of the best waves only work under specific conditions.
KwaZulu-Natal South Coast (April to July): Offers warm water, consistent beach breaks, and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Works particularly well for intermediate surfers looking to mix surfing with nature, culture, and coastal towns.
Durban & Central KZN (February to March): Known for energetic surf culture and consistent beach breaks. Early in the year, the combination of swell and warm water makes it a great introduction to South African surfing.
The Western Cape & Cape Town (February to May, September to October): Delivers dramatic scenery and powerful waves. Late summer and autumn offer excellent conditions, while spring sees improvement along the West Coast and Cape Peninsula.
South Africa's coastline is incredibly diverse — and highly dependent on swell direction, wind patterns, tides, and local geography. A spot that is perfect one day can be completely unsurfable the next.
Working with Royden means:
One of the most exciting possibilities is the seamless combination of world-class surfing with world-class wildlife experiences. Picture this: a morning game drive in KZN, an afternoon surf session on the KZN coast. Or several days exploring the Garden Route's beaches and coastal hikes, punctuated with surf breaks. Or a week based on the South Coast with Royden, combining daily waves with visits to local communities and cultural experiences.
Every journey begins with a conversation. Royden will design your surf experience, and together we'll craft your South African journey around it.
